SEERA 2020: The Energy Transition Hall, the major innovation of the 4th edition

From 08 to 09 October 2020, the fourth edition of the Africa Renewable Energy and Energy Week (SEERA) will be held in Ouagadougou. This Thursday, October 8, then took place the official opening ceremony marking the start of the activities of the said week under the chairmanship of the Minister of Energy, Dr Bachir Ouédraogo, and under the theme: « Regional integration for a successful energy transition » . The People’s Republic of China is the guest of honor at this edition.

Let’s go for 48 hours of exchanges and sharing of knowledge, experiences and innovations around energies and renewable energies. Indeed, the Week of Renewable Energies and Energies of Africa (SEERA), in its fourth edition, has the general objective of creating a framework for reflection and promotion of new technologies in order to draw up an inventory of policies. regional integration in the field of energy and carry out an in-depth analysis of funding opportunities for sub-regional projects in the field of energy.

Dr Bachir Ouédraogo, Minister of Energy and President of the opening ceremony, did not hide his joy at presiding over such an event, one of the main objectives of which is the success of an energy transition in Africa in a manner general and in particular in Burkina Faso. « The chosen theme is worthy of interest because the success of the energy transition is an ambition shared by Burkina Faso with the other countries of the continent and in particular those of West Africa », he noted. regarding the choice of theme.

For him, through the organization of this SEERA and even more telling facts, in particular the construction of sixteen solar power plants with a capacity of 250 Megawatts, Burkina Faso is really playing the role of leader in solar energy in the sub-sector. -region. « By 2022, we will be at 30% of our consumption coming from solar energy », he announced in addition.

He also welcomed the qualitative leap that Burkina Faso has been able to make over the past five years in terms of people’s access to energy. “In five years, we have gone from 500 villages which had access to energy to nearly 1,200 villages, thanks to solar energy…. With Sonabel, between 2015 and 2020, we went from 500,000 subscribers to 900,000 subscribers, ”he quoted, refusing to be satisfied with such performance, especially since only 45% of the population has access to it. energy, and that the objective is universal access to energy.

Thus, saying he is happy for the recent inauguration of the solar panel assembly company « Faso Energy », he says he sees how the private sector can live and that the example of the assembly company can attract other investors locally. “How can he have access to investment in order to be able to open plants made in Burkina?” He summed up while recalling that energy development is the responsibility of the private sector and students (participants of this SEERA 4); and to whom he asked to take as an example Prof. Frédéric Ouattara, President of the Norbert Zongo University (UNZ), who is trying to put Burkina Faso into orbit through the ground station of the “Burkina-Sat 1” satellite.

As for the choice of the People’s Republic of China as guest of honor for this edition, Dr Bachir, to justify such a choice, relies on the current rank that the country holds in the world in terms of renewable energy, installation of solar power, hydroelectric power and many other assets that it presents as a developed country. “China today is one of the world’s great economic powers; it is the leading power in renewable energy; the first country in terms of installation of solar energy, hydroelectric energy … ”, he said.

The Chinese Ambassador to Burkina Faso and representative of the country as guest of honor, Li Jian, for his part, replies that China must be a reliable and lasting partner not only with a very active participation of all its actors but also of the big projects in progress or in negotiations with its partner Burkina Faso. “The other reason is that there is the presence of an organization called the Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization…”, he added as another reason that brings China to support Burkina Faso in this SEERA 4.

Ibrahim Belem, Director General of Energy Efficiency and President of the National Organizing Committee of SEERA 2020, announced the innovation brought to this new edition. « The innovations of this edition include the energy transition hall, which is an exhibition window for our companies and start-ups, but also for our universities and grandes écoles, » he said. This edition, according to his words, should provide concrete answers to these questions: « How to accelerate the process of harmonization of energy policies? » What are the funding opportunities for regional projects? What are the opportunities offered by the establishment of the regional electricity market in West Africa? « .

During these two days of activities, around 500 participants and exhibitors will discuss a rich and varied agenda on energies and renewable energies through inaugural conferences and communications, the animation of round tables and thematic scientific sessions. To these activities, we must add the final of the competition for the best innovation project in the energy field, the presentation of posters and innovations in the energy transition hall, and the organization of side-events.

As a reminder, the opening ceremony was followed by a guided tour of the energy transition hall.
